This was a 4.5 star thriller. So good! Can’t believe I only have ONE book left in the series!
LIKES:
1) Sarah and Jeffery! They keep me on my toes.
2) Lena FINALLY getting her head on straight! She has been so hard to like but it’s finally happening.
3) showing the conflicts within the church. It may have been some extreme differences but I felt that you could see how people could fall into a cult like comfort.
4) greyhounds… I have no idea why I never mentioned Sarah’s greyhounds before but I have been loving how accurate Slaughter describes their temperament. She definitely has them or had them at one point!

DISLIKES:
After reading Pretty Girls a few weeks ago, I decided to give this book a try, without realizing that it is actually fifth in a series of books I have not yet read (oops!). Learning it was part of a series actually made me interested to read the rest of the books as there were many instances in which Slaughter briefly mentioned the back story of a certain character. I kept hoping to get more information about these histories but never did (which ultimately made sense when I learned that those events referred to had taken place in other books).
Despite that minor mishap, the book largely made sense and I was able to understand the complex characters well enough. I think what I like so much about Slaughter's writing is just that - the complexity of her characters, the way that they have these rich histories and experiences, and how that really shows in a very real candid way when they interact with and speak to other characters. I find the actors quite realistic, yet witty and clever and damaged. It all just feels so palpable and real to me. I also very much admire the way that Slaughter tends to focus her books (well, from the mere two I have read now) on strong female characters. I do wish that these characters - namely, Lena and Sara - could be just as headstrong and independent when it comes to the men in their lives, but I guess that sort of inconsistency makes for good reading.
In terms of the actual story in Faithless, I quite liked the mystery of it. I enjoyed how eerie the Ward family was while still, in many ways, being a normal group of people grieving a loved one. I liked the pace of the book, how more and more small pieces of information were revealed throughout, and how it all built up at the end. I did find Paul's involvement in the murders a bit predictable (and Cole, for that matter) as they were both quite vilified from the very beginning. But it was still an interesting read and I certainly didn't have the whole ending figured out until I got there.
This book grabbed my interest and kept it the whole way through. I still don't think that "mystery" type novels are my favorite genre, but I definitely like Slaughter's writing style and I'm sure I will be reading more of her in the future.

This audiobook has a different narrator, which I was really upset about initially because the characters all sounded different, but I didn’t hate the voice. This story was also more interesting than the plots of books 2-3 so that was a fun suprise. Just waiting on book 6 because the library doesn’t have an audiobook copy! It will be my first Slaughter book I physically read.

Utter tedium. A 200-page crime story padded out to 500+ pages with backstory about unlikable characters.
