It was such an eye-opening book written by the granddaughter of a man who used to be a slave. The book was written in the perspective of two fifteen-year-old girls. One white, one black. The black girl is Amari who has lost everyone and everything she loved and the white girl, Polly, is an indentured servant and orphan. There is so much character development that these girls display as they overcome experiences that many people could never imagine.

We join her trip across the ocean and being bought as a birthday present for a spoiled young man. She escapes, after witnessing unbelievable horrors. And we share her search for freedom.

 YA historical fiction. This book does a remarkable job of presenting this story of enslavement to a YA audience without shying away from the brutality slavery, and even though it does show this reality, there is hopeful ending. The audiobook was a great way to read this book.

An excellent historical fiction that depicts the horrors of slavery. It was well written,descriptive and quite emotional. I absolutely loved it.
