Original review on Julalicious Book Paradise

I was starting to doubt that I would ever get to read another book in this series when no dates could be seen anywhere, but finally, it came and it made me really happy. I love Simone Elkeles' writing so much and I couldn't wait to read more from this world.

This book reminded me from time to time of Perfect Chemistry though the relationship between the two main characters wasn't anything like Alex and Brittany's, their backgrounds were quite similar to them. He's seen as the bad boy and she's the good girl from the good family.

He is in love with her and she’s dating his best friend. Vic, can’t seem to forget her but he will suffer rather than to betray his best friend. He is quite loyal and that sums pretty much Vic Salazar in this story. He has attitude that could point him as a bad boy, but he isn’t really. He likes to have fun with his friends, but he’s really a caring person. He may not always show it right, but the intention is there.

Monika is every parents dream, but she’s obviously tired of being so overprotected. She doesn’t just look like any average popular cheerleader; she is one. But, she has quite overprotective parents and in this book, you can tell she’s trying to prove to herself that she isn’t as fragile as they believe.

The two of them are best friends, but throughout the story, while you know Vic’s feelings for her have been there for quite a while, you get to see Monika’s perspective of the boy change even though she’ll try to deny it.

When a tragic event occurs, both of their lives are changed and trying to do the right thing isn’t always easy when so many secrets are kept in the dark. While he pushes everyone away, she only wants to connect with the guy who has been there for her; who knows the real her.

I was really glad familiar faces came back in this story like Alex. It’s always nice to see where him and Brittany are at. There were some background stories that I really liked too, but I won’t spoil them for you; you’ll just have to read this book and find out ;)

I really liked this book, but I did prefer the first one. I do wonder what the next book will be about and I really hope it’s Vic’s sister, but who knows who Simone has in mind for the next one.

This book was awesome!! I felt like I was reading Perfect Chemistry again. Simone Elkeles never disappoints me. She definitely knows how to write a good romance story.

Aku suka Victor, sungguh.. Tapi cuma dia yang kusukai dari buku ini. Dan Victor seorang tidak sanggup untuk menyelamatkan novel ini.

My Rating:
star :2.5/5
bikini : 1/5

[9.25 stars ⭐️.] Monika and Vic will always be one of my favorite couples. Throughout this story,  I just wanted to give both of them hugs 😭. Idk what, but something about this book is SO GOOD. definitely one of my favorites by Simone Elkeles!

I’m a big fan of this author’s other books and so I had high hopes for this one. Unfortunately, it just didn’t live up to my expectations. The pace moved too slowly and having a character sulk for half the book just isn’t for me. I feel like having the death happen at the beginning of the book would have been better because we could have then seen how the two main characters moved on from it and bonded together over their mutual grief. Instead, by having it in the middle, it caused the ending to feel rushed. We as readers are told many things about these two characters and how they’re attracted to each other but don’t realize it. But we never really get to see that as their interest in each other is developing. It just feels too forced because the story is more focused on a character that dies and how he exists in between the 2 main characters.

I hate giving this book three stars, although that isn't a slouch of a rating. I am just used to giving Simone Elkeles books higher ratings. Not that this one is bad, just not one of my favorites. It seemed rushed, and I just didn't get pulled into it the way I usually do.
That being said, I loved the glimpses of previous books in this one. And I look forward to the next.

I received a review copy from netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I'm not a fan of this cover which is quite surprising as it has the aspects in the cover that I normally love but this cover just doesn't work for me. I think what it is that puts me off the cover is the composition of the bodies as it just looks weird. I also don't see these two as Vic and Monika either.

After loving the first book in the Wild Cards series I was very excited to read this one but in the end it was no where near as good as the first one in fact I nearly DNFed it but I held out because it's Simone Elkeles. I did think I was going to enjoy when I first started it but things slowly started to annoy me more and more. It felt far to predictable which I don't always mind but things that happened that would normally 'shock' I guessed would happen in the beginning. I didn't believe in any of the relationships especially Monika's and Vic's as they just didn't seem to gel plus it felt like it was one sided for pretty much most of the book. For me the ending felt rushed with no real closure I was expecting so much to happen yet it felt like it abruptly finished.

I didn't warm to many of the characters but I did like seeing the returning couple from the previous book plus some characters from her Perfect Chemistry series was great. Monika annoyed me the most as she was a bit of a pushover and just plain annoying. There was moments in the beginning where I actually loved Vic as he was sweet and selfless but then that all changed in the second half of the book and after that I couldn't stand him.

Overall, I was so disappointed with this book but it won't stop me reading this series or even any Simone Elkeles books as I know she has done amazing work so I will always hope that she writes another gem.

This is a story about two people who are hurting. They both have secrets from themselves and each other. The plot is similar to Simone Elekles other novels but not a bad formula. I enjoy the romantic aspects of the plot and journey these characters have taken since "Perfect Chemistry."
