This is a cute book for young girls to read, especially. It doesn't have a load of "meat" to it.
Ann Hamilton is based off of a real person, though some of how this story works out is fictionalized. There is historic evidence of something that occurs in the story at the end though.
The story is set after the Revolutionary War. The Hamilton family moved a bit west of Gettysburg, where they had previously lived. They have a small cabin and Ann has a vegetable garden and is teaching a boy to read and write. Her family always tells her "some day" but really, she just wants to go back home. This is certainly one of those "coming of age" sorts of stories.

How did I never read this before! An older book about a pioneer girl who lived on a hill I drive up twice a week?! Inconceivable!

I wish I had read this as a girl. I would have absolutely loved it. I still absolutely loved reading it as a 38 year old! This was also a read-aloud to my 5 and 7 year olds and they really enjoyed it too, especially the last chapter!

I read this with my daughter (6). While she enjoyed it, it wasn't one of our favorites.

A book about life in the west when the United States was new. Inspired by two diaries and a family story this books helps you fall online with a time now long forgotten.
