A classic, published in 1835, this book started out promisingly with superb descriptions of the run-down Parisian boarding house where the story takes places, as well as introducing the motley crew of characters who inhabit it. But then it meandered on for what seemed an eternity with nothing happening, resulting in the the frequent desire to skim read. I did not empathise with any of the characters. They tended to be either fools, like Father Goriot whose over indulgence of his shallow daughters was tragic. His daughters were thoughtless, spoilt and greedy. And the majority of other characters all seemed to be either crooks or acting with ulterior motives. A generous 3 stars because of the clever writing a the beginning of the book; otherwise not great.
