I had always heard of the Horatio Alger storyline of the "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" and wanted to read the original source.

I found this a delightful and easy to read story of Ragged Dick, a boot blacker ragamuffin who pulled himself out of poverty through a series of fortuitous events combined with a hard work ethic along with impressive integrity. The book was filled with lots of charmful humor. A fun read.
