I wasn’t sure at first, but my curiosity for what would come next in the succession of characters overcame my skepticism. Time travel in a sense. Tickled my love for hidden histories.
The structure of the book reminds me of Olive Kitterage by Elizabeth Strout as a sort of connected series of short stories.

What an extraordinary book. It’s so unusual, so different from anything I’ve read before. In some ways it reminds me of Homegoing where each chapter is told from a different character’s perspective, and which moves the story along chronologically.
This is so beautifully written, told in so many voices - third person narrative and first person narrative, plus letters, poems and songs, a doctor’s medical notes, a magazine article. There’s such a variety of characters - a Johnny Appleseed type, an antebellum bounty hunter looking for slaves, a landscape painter, the mother of a schizophrenic son, a grad student who loves the forest and its ephemeral spring blossoms. There are some ghosts, an elm disease fungus, and wild animals.
It’s a beautiful tale, so lovingly told, of a place that changes over hundreds of years and yet is still the same.
