Can I give this 10/5 stars? I loved this books from start to finish. It's odd, quirky, sad, melancholy, haunting -- but it made me so happy. Read it! I'm going to read it again.

I saw some reviews comparing it to Overstory by Richard Powers and I get that because the woods in North Woods is the main character of the story (along with a creepy old house) like the trees are the main characters in Overstory, but I liked this one much more than Overstory (which I liked.)

I loved loved LOVED this book. I really loved the concept- like a multigenerational novel about a single house instead of a single family; the narrative structure- told through letters, diaries, songs, poems, clinical notes, and third person narrative so you never get bored; the themes- change, growth, decay, succession, the intertwining of the natural world with the human world; the introduction of supernatural elements without taking over the story. It was like a book tailor-made for my tastes. *chef's kiss*

This might’ve been 5 stars for me if I read it at a different time. I loved the weaving stories of humans to tell the story about land. Felt very East coast. The end came a little undone for me.
