Every Tiny Tooth And Claw (or: Letters From The First Month Of The New Directorate) - Marissa Lingen ****
Uses the epistolary format cleverly to tell a neat tale. Flashes of fascinating worldbuilding behind the structure, as animal- and water-based magic researchers correspond in the lead up to and during a coup. Light and fun despite the stakes and gives depth to the romance with brief touches.
The Candle Queen - Ephiny Gale ****
A lovely spin on the familiar idea of a girl trained from youth for a momentous role, but choosing love over supposed destiny. An exciting world in the background but simply a story well told, with enough sparks and twists to the formula to be fresh.
