I love love love Brandon Taylor. I think he’s my new favorite author. His characters are beautiful, wrestling with their flaws in the emotionally-complex scenarios they are thrust into, and he builds a full picture of their lives within the constrains of a short story.

I loved Real Life, so I had had this on my TBR for a while. This definitely felt in line with Brandon Taylor's previous work. I liked the continuous story the best, with Lionel and Charles and Sophie, and was always glad when we returned to them. I also liked when a new installment was from a different person's perspective. As characters, they were just complex enough to feel really grounded in reality, while still feeling a little distant and difficult to fully know. I like this aspect of Taylor's characters, the way they feel both really vulnerable and guarded at the same time. I liked this collection, and look forward to what he writes next.

Δεν έχω λόγια για τη συγγραφική ταλεντάρα που ονομάζεται Brandon Taylor. Στο δεύτερο βιβλίο του μας παρουσιάζει έντεκα ιστορίες, οι έξι από τις οποίες είναι συνέχειες η μία της άλλης. Στη βασική ιστορία έχουμε τρεις πρωταγωνιστές και οι ιστορίες είναι χωρισμένες σε δύο οπτικές, του Charles και του Lionel. Οι υπόλοιπες ιστορίες, αν και αυτοτελείς, έχουν μέσα μικρά ψήγματα της βασικής ιστορίας. 

Η πρώτη ιστορία αποτυπώνει κάτι βαθύτερο από τις απελπισμένες προσπάθειες για συζήτηση σε ένα βαρετό δείπνο, τις μη φιλτραρισμένες απαντήσεις και τις επιφανειακές συζητήσεις με επικάλυψη σεξουαλικών υπονοούμενων και γλώσσα που αφήνει να φανούν πρόσφατα προβλήματα ψυχικής υγείας.

Οι μετέπειτα ιστορίες διαβάζονται ως αυτοτελείς αντανακλάσεις, βαθιές μελέτες χαρακτήρων που εξόρυξαν τις πολυπλοκότητες της επιθυμίας και της ευπάθειας, και την ακατανίκητη δίψα και για τα δύο εν μέσω περιστάσεων που συνήθως δεν συγχωρούν. 

Η χρήση της δομής του βιβλίου δίνει στον αναγνώστη τον απαραίτητο χρόνο μακριά από τον Charles, το Lionel και τη Sophie, κάτι απαραίτητο λόγω της πολυπλοκότητας των θεμάτων. Η απόσταση αυτή μου επέτρεπε  να προβληματιστώ και να δω από διαφορετική οπτική τους χαρακτήρες όταν επέστρεφα στην κεντρική αφήγηση.

Κάτι που θαυμάζω πολύ στον Taylor είναι ότι οι ιστορίες του είναι μια μικρή ματιά στη ζωή ενός ατόμου, αλλά ταυτόχρονα είναι τόσο λεπτομέρειες και πολύπλοκες. Η δυναμική μεταξύ των χαρακτήρων του και των αλληλεπιδράσεών τους είναι τόσο ενδιαφέρουσα και πραγματική. Λατρεύω την αισθητική του και τον τρόπο που ζωγραφίζει το σκηνικό του με τόση λεπτότητα. Επιπλέον, εκτίμησα την αντίθεση της αποστασιοποιημένης, σε σημεία, γραφής του με την ένταση και την πολυπλοκότητα των συναισθημάτων. Θεωρώ ότι αν δεν υπήρχε αυτή η αντίθεση, κάποια σημεία θα ήταν αβάσταχτο να διαβαστούν.

Αυτή η συλλογή διηγημάτων εξισορροπεί τέλεια την οικειότητα και την αποστασιοποίηση, την ήσυχη παρατήρηση και τα βαθιά συναισθήματα. Παρουσιάζει με εξαιρετικό τρόπο το γεγονός ότι αναγκαζόμαστε από την κοινωνία, την οικογένεια, τους φίλους, τη δουλειά μας να βάλουμε την ψυχική μας υγεία στην τελευταία θέση των προτεραιοτήτων μας για να καλύψουμε βασικές ανάγκες για τις οποίες δε θα έπρεπε να παλεύουμε και προσδοκίες που μας έχουν επιβληθεί, οι οποίες δεν αντικατοπτρίζουν τα θέλω μας.
