Very fun book, where for once the police are not the protagonist. Dolly is a “stiff old cow” as the book puts it and it’s an apt description. Gritty and fun. It is from the perspective of like 10 characters at once although la plante does a good job of making it smooth

The book felt too long. I rarely say this but the movie was better.

The narrator sounds like an old granny, reading breathlessly from the crime scandal sheets. Her voice keeps cracking.
Not her fault but also not the right pick for a crime-thriller.

I might come back to this one someday, but for now it's a DNF. I really liked the movie, which was why I tried the book, but I just couldn't get into it. It felt more like a screenplay than a book, which I can really only get into on special occasions.
*Short review because these are books I read in 2018*

Not one of La Plante’s best books, but, I’ll probably carry on reading the series after I’ve watch Viola Davis’s version of the film.
a very average 3* from me.

Got this novel as part of a mystery box. Really glad I did, as I probably wouldn’t have picked it up on my own.
A good fun heist with some less than easy at times female friendships, Widows was a joy to read. The overly stereotypical portrayal of cops was a bit of a detractor, but I liked to gradual build up to the heist. Also not leaving a happy ever after immediately following the robbery was a good choice, as it allowed for a touch more realism and time to close out some important plot points.
