Holy unreliable narrator. Paranoid, popping pills, chasing with alcohol. She was pretty unlikable and made the first 200 pages more frustrating then anything. The killer was predictable, maybe I’ve read too many thrillers. Definitely not my favorite at all.

A Flicker in the Dark was a thriller through and through.  There were twists and turns around every corner. Just when you believe they revealed who the killer was, the author flipped the script on you and everything changed.

I really appreciated Stacy Willingham’s strategic use of characters to keep us guessing on what was happening in this novel.  She used the closeness of the relationship between the lead character, Chloe, and her brother, Cooper, to distract you from a lot of the red flags.  She let that relationship cloud Chloe’s judgment on her own relationship with her fiance, Daniel.

The back and forth between past memories and present situations made for an interesting dynamic within this book. The struggle that Chloe was clearly dealing with within herself was exacerbated by the memories of what she believed she saw when she was a child.

My emotional attachment to the main character because of her PTSD-like symptoms and her mental health struggle really overshadowed my judgment at some points while reading this book. It felt as though I threw my logical brain out the window and felt what she felt in those moments.  It really clouded my judgment on who I thought the killer was for a few chapters.

The demise of the relationship between Chloe and Daniel due to the relationship between Chloe and her brother made for an interesting internal debate for me.  At first I was very proud of Chloe for standing up to her brother, then I was shocked when the tide turned and it seemed as though Cooper may have been right, but ultimately I was crushed for Chloe because of her initial instinct to protect her relationship.

The twists and turns of this novel really kept me on my toes and I’m looking forward to reading more from this author. I thank you all for taking the time to read my review of this book and I hope you all take the time to pick this one up!  It’s definitely worth you time! (heart)
