I didn’t think the first book needed a sequel, but I’m so glad there is one. There’s a lot of satisfying closure here, and I can’t count the number of times a line or two brought me to tears. Great audio version.

While I am usually a fan of historical fiction, especially anything taking place during World War II, I felt the story in this book fell flat.
While Ada is not directly involved in anything to do with the war, her conflicts come from living in the country with a new guardian and coming to terms with their new houseguest, a Jewish girl, who changes Ada's outlook on life.

I really loved the first book, and I did enjoy the sequel, just not as much. I really liked how they showed that war affected all economic classes, not just the poor/working class.

"Fear and what you did with it were two separate thing
So so glad I read this sequel. It was even better."

Fear and Bravery are a huge theme in this book. Anxiety and peace. Friendships and Family.

I loved how all the characters just changed so much from the beginning of the first book. I fell in love with even the unloved.

"Love isn’t as rare as you think it is…You can love all sorts of people, in all sorts of ways. Nor is love in any way dangerous.”

Loved how this one went more into the Holocaust story and we meet a Jewish girl.

"“I don’t want to have to feel grateful,” I said. Susan smiled. “I understand,” she said. “Do it anyhow.”

IM NOT CRYING, YOU'RE CRYING

OH NO MY BAD, I'M CRYING. I'M CRYING SO MUCH. I'M CRYING SO MUCH IT'S MAKING YOU CRY TOO.

BUT LIKE IN A GOOD WAY THOUGH.

Loved it! The author is not afraid to write about tragedy and loss. And offsets tragedy with personal growth, love, kindness. It’s told through the eyes of 11 year old Ada, born with a club foot that her mother never sought to remedy. Ada has to work through a lot of baggage before arriving at the end of the book. Great story!
