Solid sequel that is equally as moving as the first book. Ada really is dealing with so many emotions and issues; it’s moving to read her struggles. You also learn a bit more about the other characters and their back stories that makes them more complex. I really wish there was one more in the series—I don’t want to say goodbye to these people!

This will be the series I recommend to students who ask for a “sad” book!

Great follow-up to the first one. The themes of healing and learning to trust after being broken are well written. Ada learns to trust herself and the love of others.

"Fear and what you did with it were two separate things."

Ada Smith has been afraid all her life. Now that her mother can't hurt her anymore, surely she has gained her happily ever after?

Wrong.

This is a story about healing. This is a story about perservering. About mercy. About sisters. About family. About facing your fears and overcoming them. About grieving. About learning. About letting go of the past to face the future. This is a story about fighting a war, and she's winning.

"We're surviving now."
"We're doing better than that. I think we won."

Oh my heavens, this was a good book. I didn't want it to end.

It tackles anxiety, loss, grief, fear, mistrust, family relationships, LGBTQ+ relationships... it was just. so. good. This is a duology that I will need to own.

My only complaint is that it did move a bit slowly in the beginning. But then again, so did Ada. Oh that was a bad joke. I'm fired.

3.5 stars but you cant give partial numbers. It was kind of slow, but not bad.

I absolutely love these historical children's novels. Highly recommend!!

This duology is my pandemic comfort read.
