As an introduction to the GCPD, this works pretty well. There's more of a focus on two officers in particular, and the cases are fairly low-stakes, despite featuring some classic Batman villains in a limited capacity. Part of me wishes that the writers hadn't included them (or Batman himself) since they're more of a distraction but I guess the idea is that the city is filled with cases that occasionally intersect with these larger than life characters we're familiar with.
Really interesting concept- Batman's city from the perspective of the cops of the GCPD. It's in a great, gritty, hardboiled style, and it's got a good mystery storyline. Someone also was clearly a Homicide: Life on the Street fan, as certain elements were clearly borrowed, I was amused to note.
My only real critique is the fact that I still have no idea of the names of most of the characters. They definitely could have used a more clear introduction or a character guide, as I had an impossible time keeping straight who was who, even when character were actually introduced at all.

This was a good sturdy book, more to my taste than most graphic novels. It was Law and Order: Gotham, and as such had two of my favorite elements ever--Batman and police procedurals. The stories were interesting. The characters were interesting. the art wasn't bad. and of course I squealed whenever Batman showed up (which wasn't often, since that's not what this is about). I'd definitely read more of these. Short and sweet, an easy read that serves as a nice literary palate cleanser between heavier books.
I wish I'd reviewed this the moment I read it, because it was really really good, but now I'm reviewing it after having reviewed vol. 2 which has devastated me completely, so this is just to say: what a fantastic idea for a series. Procedurals in Gotham, with Batman as an utterly peripheral presence. It's brilliant.
A compelling cop drama that just happens to have cameos by Batman and Mr. Freeze. As a fan of Batwoman but with little other DC knowledge, I appreciated getting more insight on Maggie Sawyer and Renee Montoya.
