I'm usually a fan of the classics and enjoy reading them. Jane Eyre was an exception. I felt like the story moved very slowly, which lead to me laying the book down and walking away for days at a time.

Okay, the only good plot line in this novel is Rochester's crazy wife. I get that Bertha and Grace Poole aren't "main" characters, but I feel like that was a juicier story. I close this book wanting to hear more about Rochester's in-laws.
The bits of magical realism at the end with Jane Eyre hearing her once and future lover's voice from afar -- a thing the author apparently claimed happened in her own life?? -- did not make sense in the context of the book. Unless Bronte really did buy into the "magic of true love" thing. Which I guess is fair considering when this was written.
And why is Jane Eyre obsessing over her cousin at the end when it's clear that those two will not end up together? Feels like filler. Might just have easily widened the page margins.
Speaking of the cousins. She has no money and nowhere to go and ends up on the streets for a few days (days! how tragic) and is saved by the goodness of -- what's this? -- her only living relatives. And they're well-off. And turns out she's got a fortune waiting for her, from their side of the family. Wait, what? So the moral of he story is that if you work hard, keep your head down, stick to your guns...and have a rich, dead uncle...everything will be okay?! And people are calling this book "feminist"? Am I missing something?
That said, the first part of the book about her shitty childhood was alright. And it was cool how she went back to care for the mean aunt at the end of the woman's life (although the "evil stepmother" trope is played out). The book could have ended there.
Sorry this is so disjointed. I am really annoyed at having spent so much time on this book. Maybe if I'd been around to read it when it came out..? Also, did the French conversations really add anything of value to the book that they couldn't be translated for us philistines?
