Very challenging to read (trauma, rape, incest, and slow-paced). Beautifully written but I hated most of the characters. Betty felt like a mere observer without agency (which I suppose is the point) until the moment she confronted Leland at the end, but that glorious moment couldn’t redeem the entire book for me.

I love how even though the story is being told in retrospect, Betty’s voice changes over time as she grows up. This book hurt me in a very beautiful way.

Beautifully told with a very clear voice. I want to believe that so much tragedy in one family is too much, but the light in this book makes it worth the dark.
