I finally started reading the Dirk Pitt series and I had a lot of fun reading this one! I read this after reading several of the Game of Thrones books and it was such a great change of pace to jump into a fast adventure with lots of interesting settings.

The story was okay but Cussler's treatment of Pitt's romantic interests is way too sudden and leaves much to be desired.

I found this book in the 'grab it or it gets thrown out' area of my apartment building, so I decided to read it. It is an incredibly bad book but... I did not go into thinking it would be anything else. I don't even know how to give a star rating to a book that you know is trash but read because trash can be fun. It was fun but uh, unfortunately the author's romantic subplot of a woman and the hero falling in love after one interaction where she tried to kill him and he threatened to rape her, was so bad it went beyond fun trash to become the bad kind of trash that needs to be cut because otherwise it can kill dolphins. My review: 2/5 trashcans, there's better trash out there to fit your trash needs, but if you discover it next to a dumpster, it will do.

This is the first ever Dirk Pitt novel. I've read a couple here and there, but out of order and thought, I should begin at the beginning. It says at the beginning of the book that the author didn't want to release this because he was just starting out and didn't find it his best work, but the publishers wanted him to, so he did, belatedly. I can see it's a little more direct than his more mature works, but i liked it. No filler, just go go adventure. This causes some sort of plot holes or jumps in belief, but overall, an entertaining fast read. One of my coworkers even stopped me in the lunch room to tell me how much she enjoys this series. I love books that are like action movies! Blow things up! Almost die! Hot women! Save the world! yay! lol. Quick read, once i actually got into it.
