Robert's writing was clumsy in places and even though the book was full of facts, I didn't find her exploration of the Celts a particularly exciting adventure as it is purported to be. Meh.

A very interesting exploration of all the evidence about where the Celts came from, focusing heavily on archeology and linguistics. That seems to be the primary focus - their origins, rather than who they were or their culture, which was rather zoomed over, but as I have others books on Celtic culture to read next I didn't mind that. Alice was incredibly sceptical throughout the book, about basically everything - this did get a bit relentless at times, but in the end I think it helped the overall discussion. The book certainly led me to believe, at the start, the standard model of Celtic origins, but by the end I was definitely swayed towards the new and interesting (and more plausible) model, so in that sense this book was a success.

Aside from the way this book has personally insulted me, I do approve of her caution

Highly readable and a good length, with photos (the benefits of a traditional book over my usual audio).

A very readable and balanced introduction to the Celts, looking at the key issues of definition of celt, spread of culture, it people, and similarity in language, religion, burial practices, and broader cultural practices. The discussion of the 'celts from the west' towards the end of the book is fascinating, but seems a bit impenetrable in places (but again, she does a good enough job at least to make me want to know more and to encourage me to read more which no doubt reflects well on this book!).
Finally, I know this isn't the most important part of the book but the further reading section is useful for both further introductions to the Celts generally, further introductions to some of the key ideas and authors, and also more advanced reading which is a useful start.
