A solid thriller with a great sense of place and time. Like the best thrillers, the twists and turns are strong and generally unpredictable. The small cast of characters and their stories threading through and over each other is satisfying - another few people and it would have become unwieldy.

The main character is not a human at all, it is the Asylum that has impacted everyone in their own way. More than that would be telling.

Although the tension and twists were compelling, toward the end I found myself rushing to get through it.

There were points where I hovered around a 3* rating, but it really picked up in the second half! Some parts of this book were a bit predictable, but there were lots of elements that I never saw coming!

I loved how this book moved through time and between different perspectives, it really added a layer. Definitely a worthwhile read!
