This middle grade comic is pretty cute! What it has to offer: Chinese-American mc, cute art style, diverse cast, dragons, Chinese mythology, Chinese setting, and adventure. What’s not so great: whenever the characters need to know something, they basically just google it (even preposterous things) or someone conveniently just read about it, and the villain dialogue is not good at all. The book also portrays science as inherently evil in a simplistic way.

I randomly picked this up at the bookstore, just because it was one of the few graphic novels they had and it looked ADORABLE. And I loved this! It's like reading a middlegrade Marvel movie, and with DRAGONS!!

This was great! I don’t normally read graphic comics, but this one was such a fun adventure. I love the Asian myths being told and woven in with modern day. It was quite scary and had very sad moments. I don’t think I would give this to my nephews to read as it seems quite intense for kids.
Content Warnings
If you have sensitive kids, this book has the death of a parent (which at the end turns out to be way worse than you originally thought), a step parent/company who is stalking/tracking the child, kids fighting/targeting in the opening page. It’s a lot.
