Not quite what I expected. There's a pretty standard Trek adventure as a framing story (with a surprising connection to post-TOS Trek that I'm curious about), but it's really more focused on Sulu and his having to deal with a tragic event. Not bad, just be aware the back cover blurb is a very small part of the actual plot.

Disappointing - not sure why, lots happens but the first half seems very slow. Lots of navel gazing by Kirk and even romance for Sulu, but somehow it just doesn't seem to really convey the emotions. The action hots up in the 2nd half but is still just a emotionless reporting of events with little humour either.
It does set up the romance of Kirk & Admiral Lori what's her name

I've been in a bit of a reading slump lately so I greatly appreciate a trip to the 23rd century to hang with Kirk and his crew. It's not a terrible tie in, nor is it one of my favourites, but it was just what I needed.

The actual mission, which covers several months during the final year of the first five year mission, is fairly basic until the last bit of the book (no spoilers). There are cities being destroyed and no one can figure out why - especially since the cities look ancient but really far from it. There's a lot of back and forth, a lot of risk, and the usual moral conundrum that goes along with that.

Our big personal storylines boil down to Kirk wondering what's going to become of him once the five year mission ends, and Sulu's relationship with a female crew member (who was awesome but underused). Also Sulu buts heads with Kirk, which I found very painful but in a good way. It may have been a little out of character but it really stabbed me in the gut even knowing that everything wasn't lost.

If you're looking for a decent escapism book from the Trek 'verse, this definitely fits the bill.
