This audiobook is incredibly lovely. I felt for all the characters in a crazy complicated situation and loved the way love unfolded.

I read this book all in one sitting. It hits very close to home because I lost my own father 6 years ago when I was 20 along with losing a few family members this year. I do wish it were longer but I loved reading it.

Brilliant! A breathtaking reflection of how secretive some people are and how dense and complex a human relationship can be. But, in the end, love and family are the keys to a peaceful and joyful life. One of the few books with an “open ending” that felt like a closure. The focus on their grief and secrets was the essence of this book, and closure follows exactly like Camino and Yahaira: something they will deal with their entire lives.

I loved reading the unique perspective of Camino and Yahaira in this book. It was so sad and interesting to see the way the same event affected each of their lives in similar and different ways. I was on the verge of tears at multiple points throughout the book. Although I expected the two girls to learn of each other and meet much sooner, I still enjoyed how everything ended.

I loved the novel-in-verse style of this book. It flowed so beautifully and was a pleasure to read.

The pain of this story was captured so well, it felt as though I was one of the daughters devastated at my father’s death. I especially loved when the two daughters finally meet for their father’s DR funeral. It was dynamic and explored a wealth of emotions between these two daughters, and beyond. There were so many different, powerful, flawed, and intriguing women in this story.

I’d certainly recommend the book.

I had a different experience when I listened to the audiobook from when I was reading the ebook.

I liked both but with the audiobook, I felt the words. I cried a lot I felt everything on a deeper level.
I was going to just read the ebook, but glad I switched and listened to it. it was done perfectly and executed proficiently and precisely as it should.

Just like a magician, the author turned a plot that we could hear about anywhere, into a brilliant story to remember and cry over it and carry it with us as we carry on in our days.
.....
Loss. sisterhood. betrayal
This was a full story that exists bc of a man who has a double life
Finding\ discovering a sisterhood that was brought to life bc of that man's actions

A very delicate emotion, who is at fault, what is next if the who is dead.
How to deal with loss and betrayal at the same time. how to come to an understanding with the other person who stands on the other side of the story.

---
SPOILER ALERT:
I loved how the 2 daughters came to terms with their new sister's existence. how they come together to connect and know each other
It heart wrecking and heartwarming at the same time
---

a plot of kindness and understanding
Strangers that become family
Found family at the core of it.

"She turns to me with an eyebrow raised.
I imagine it’s kind of giving thanks.
Of all the ways it could end
it ends not with us in the sky or the water,
but together
on solid earth
safely grounded."

Elizabeth Acevedo is such a thoughtful author. She wades you into her information, creating a gradual personality for each character. The tragedy discussed in this book rattled me and broke my heart. Acevedo handled it with an expert hand and asked the question “What if we don’t truly know the person we lost?” The verse writing style kept me engaged and reflected the broken up thoughts of those who have lost. Loved this.
