challenging slow-paced

Overall the story is okay although frustrating, the symbolism is good, but wayyy too wordy. Hester is punished for the sin of adultery for several years even though her husband hadn't been present for a year or two and (as far as the village knows) never comes back, even 7 years later.. Give her a friggen break.. Hester's husband was just lurking around and no one knew who he really was.

too wordy but the story is amazing especially for his own time. i loved the characters and all of the symbolism in the story, but it could’ve been like 100 pages shorter if Hawthorne had just gotten to the point.

This book was a slog. I found myself spending more time deciphering the text than following the story.

I read it along with watching the BBC 4 part adaptation.
It’s a treat to read an author with an extensive vocabulary. There is plenty to discuss- the questions posed are still relevant.
The reader needs to appreciate dense prose and slow pace and deep examination of the human psyche.

2.5

Not sure what to rate this, I enjoyed the writing but it was very repetitive like we get it Hester and the minister are repenting and feel guilty with self inflicted wounds to the point where others forgive them. Pearl was the GOAT i love her <3 she always kept it real glad she just randomly got Chillingsworth's fortune. I strongly hate the fact the minister only laid the truth all out as he was dying, piss off you're a loser you shouldn't be allowed forgiveness but okay...

best moments - we hear about big D's whipping himself with candles, the crazy witch lady, pearl being precocious every time, D realizing RC is evil but they're fake about it, last few chapters for spirituality and drama like imagine being a towny and you find the adulter is the MINISTER?? gag of the century
