Normally I’m not a fan of narratives – whether movie or book – that provide me with climactic scenes at the very beginning and then go back in time to give the reader a kind of ‘how did we end up here’ plot. I don’t think Atmosphere has changed my mind on my general opinion of that style, but it really worked for me here. It adds this bittersweet undercurrent to everything that happens, which is perhaps what lends this book a more serious air than your usual romance. Because it very much is a romance. It’s also a lot of other things, but believe the cover when it tells you it’s a love story (I saw some people complain about the lack of science considering it’s an astronaut book, but I was fine with it, even being a bit of a space nerd myself – just bear it in mind).

Like a good love story, it will also break your heart. I full-on bawled my way through the last ten pages, which are written so, so well. A book that makes me bawl like that is impossible to review. I have no notes. Certainly no negative ones. It’s the worst but also the best, to be so fully invested that everything feels real enough to cry about it.

It felt a little choppy to me. The beginning seemed like it was setting up to be interwoven storylines, but once the "love story" starts, that's pretty much all it is for the next 100 pages. And then we dive into the storyline with the niece, before finally ending with the current day and biggest plot point. Not the ratio I was hoping for, and quite an abrupt ending, but I still always appreciate TJR's writing.
