Enjoyed the chapters when they were in high school. But couldn't get past the a few chapters after the time jump. Started skimming because it was so repetitive. DNF

Something about that book got me in right away, and I mean from the first pages right away. There's something absolutely wrong with hoping that the toxic relationship gets a happy ending, but here I was enjoying every damn seconds of that book!

Diving into one of Shain Rose’s earlier works, I decided to jump into her Stonewood Brothers series. This story centers on Aubrey and her best friend’s brother, Jax. Aubrey has always had a crush on Jax, but assumed he only saw her as his little brother’s best friend. However, once Aubrey starts high school, the dynamic between the two change. Pushed together following a traumatic event, it feels like Jax and Aubrey were always supposed to be together and solidify their relationship over the summer. That is, until Jax leaves and moves away without a goodbye.

Years later, Jax is reluctantly back in Aubrey’s life and the two struggle to fine their new normal. Complicated with past trauma, the two have to figure out if they can trust each other and are meant to be.

Overall, this book definitely had a more immature feel than Rose’s Tarnished Empire or Hardy Billionaire Brothers series - which makes sense as this occurs in the high school through young adult years. That said, I still devoured this book and felt the angst in Jax and Aubrey’s relationship. I think if you are looking at this book from that teenage/young adult perspective, it is definitely easier to see how some of the actions taken by both characters could be tolerated. I will definitely continue reading about the rest of the Stonewood Brothers, but would say if you’re not a fan of younger adult semi-toxic relationships, you may want to pick up one of Rose’s more recent books.

After reading 4 of Shain Rose’s novels (& loving them!) I knew I had to make my way through her backlist. This series was my first stop. I did struggle to connect with the characters at first, but that could be because second chance romance isn’t my typical cup of tea. As the novel progressed and Jax & Aubrey rekindled their relationship I did feel more invested in the novel. I definitely plan to read the rest of the Stonewood brother’s stories!

Talk about a roller coaster ride. I literally felt every single emotion reading Jax and Aubrey’s story. Just when I didn’t think my heart could break for Aubrey more I was proved wrong. When Aubrey and Jax went through such a tragic event and then became closer with one another, I was so excited for them. I did not see what happened next coming at all. When they finally are reunited again at Jays graduation.. things pick up right where they left off wether they want them to or not. The pull they have toward one another and the connection they share is so strong. Their story is definitely full of secrets, angst and love- along with a few plot twists I didn’t see coming. I’m excited to read the next book in the series!
