The good thing about this book is that it jumps straight into the zombie apocalypse action and doesn't have characters questioning what is happening or if zombies are real. The characters here accept it is zombies and start dealing with it.
My problem with the book comes in the writing style. We view it mostly with an ongoing internal monologue inside the head of Canada, wife, mother and self obsessed airhead. She does everything at manic speed without stopping to think about consequences which constantly endangers herself. She is reckless and impatient in her attempts to get everyone ready to leave, leading to a lot of eye rolling on my part. There are also silly things like starting to board up windows to sit out the apocalypse, mention they don't have enough boards, MC then goes back to putting boards up (so do they have enough or not???) then they decide they can't defend the house as one window is in bad repair and might fall apart if the zombies attack, and start packing to leave. Um, ok. Why did they start boarding it up and then suddenly decide to leave? Should it not have been obvious that they could not stay in an unsecure house???
But it is really being inside her head all the time that annoyed me. Her inner monologue was a jumble of confused thoughts, dumb ideas and irrelevant information ie on several occasions she insists on remembering that she hates the word 'step' when in reference to a non biological parent. Seriously Canada, zombies are all over town, you are trying to escape and THAT becomes so important??? She comes across as a bit of an airhead who has an inflated opinion of herself and wants to be all heroic yet she is critical of her husband having a 'hero complex'. The author also wants the reader to find all her random thoughts and outbursts amusing but for me it all fell pretty flat. I prefer more subtle writing where you laugh at something silly or unexpected but having this book signposted with 'LAUGH NOW PLEASE' didn't work for me. I just found it mildly irritating.
It is not a dreadful book but for me with the flat humour and only a couple of characters with any depth, it was nothing special. I didn't find it different or entertaining enough to want to continue with the series.
