3.5 stars. Really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next one. Character development and pacing are really well done. I always struggle when main characters make so many obviously stupid decisions, but Kuang managed to tie it to her character development so well that it didn’t bother me nearly as much.

I don't even know where to start with this review....This book was absolutely amazing.
There were so many memorable quotes and scenes that made my heart race while I was reading them. The book can really be divided into two halves that are very different from one another but amazing for different reasons. From the very first page, R.F. Kuang does not hold anything back. This book is brutal and thoughtful and poetic all at the same time. The fact that it is based on real events and real people in history makes you contemplate the world and morality in such a big way.
I have a few minor complaints that aren't even worth mentioning. Highly recommend.

A good book but a little too dark for me
