caprivoyant's review against another edition

I read this book roughly 10 years ago, and really appreciated everything it said. At the time I gave this book 5 stars.

I can't stand behind that rating today, though. It was a well-written book! Everything I've read by Jonathan Saran Foer is well-written. But with age, extra learning, and a lot more personal experience with dietary changes than most people ever have to navigate, I'd now say this book is incomplete. Ethically, imho, we can't speak about the morality of vegetarian/veganism without also taking into consideration the fact that there are people who are physically incapable of eating a vegan/vegetarian diet. What is the morality of telling other humans that they should be concerned about the impact their diet is having on the planet when they are struggling to feed themselves?

If you're able to eat vegan/vegetarian and want more information about why that's a better choice for the planet, you'll likely enjoy this book.

If you have a strict diet or any sort of physical disability (including food allergies) that would limit your dietary choices, I don't think I could recommend this book in good conscience. Do the best you can to eat in a way that will support the planet. I'll always get behind that. But you need to be able to eat first and foremost. You know your body better than Jonathan Saran Foer ever will (unless you are Jonathan Saran Foer... in which case hello 👋🏻). Do what you need to do to take care of yourself. You can always find other ways to help the planet if a vegan or vegetarian diet isn't it for you. ♥️
