Beautiful story of loss and coping. This book was one I couldn't put down. Wonderful, wonderful work. Compelling story, great characters.
After the incident where something terrible happened to Ethan's best friend Casey, Ethan is left with so much grief he keeps trying to run away and get to her. His mom and dad move the family across the country to live with his estranged grandfather, and Ethan has to find a way to live with himself and his family in a small coastal town in Georgia.
A beautifully written and complex story about grief, friendship, family, and bravery.
This was gREAT. I loved the siblings' relationship at the end and i might've cried.
A moving middle grade read about loss, friendship, family, growing up, grief, and coming to terms. A mysterious tragic event keeps the reader wondering and continuing to follow Ethan's journey to Georgia. Also, a bonus added learning element of endangered species is contained within the pages. One of those books that make you take pride in middle grade literature. Very recommended and worthwhile.

Loved this book...Ali Standish does a fabulous job slowly developing the character of Ethan, with all his internal battles with survivor's guilt, it's effect on his relationships around him and his slow journey back from the edge, yet she does it with simple straightforward text that my 4th and 5th grade students instantly connect with.
I wanted to like this book. I wanted this to be a book that I could give to tweens when they wanted a more serious book but are not ready for teen content. This did not happen. I am sure there will be tweens that do like this book, but there was so many things that drove me crazy. The author was trying to do so much that the book's plot was not well written. There were some lists in the book that the main character wrote to help himself calm down and they needed to either be throughout the book or not at all. Same with the story about the wolf. If this had been mentioned more throughout the book it would have made the book better.
One of the biggest problems with this book I had is that the way that the characters were written. The characters that were supposed to be 13 were not written to sound like the kids. The author also wrote very stereotypical (mean girl, weird kid, grumpy grandfather).
Overall I was not impressed and a little disappointed.
