I am not sure how I feel about this book. Both main characters are unlikable but you still care, which is a challenging thing for a writer to do. The yakuza in this book are reprehensible, which is good (they are NOT modern day Samurai, they are horrible thugs). The way Shindo loves violence makes me uncomfortable.

This surprised me! I’m not usually a huge thriller/action reader but I really really enjoyed this! It was gripping and once I got into it I really didn’t want to put it down. This book has some fun references, good plot twists/shifts, and makes some great points about identity. It is obviously its own story and differs but it has some similarities to the Netflix show Blue Eye Samurai and I mean that in all the best ways as I love that show. This was a great read that had a good plot, fun gore, action, and some introspective thought provoking points. I’d definitely recommend giving this one a read. Well worth it.

I’m in the middle of so many other books but I bought this in Japan and wanted to read it immediately. When I first read the blurb on the back of the book, my first thought was “this is gonna be gay” and when I opened the first page to the author’s intro where it said she’s an out lesbian in Japan, I thought “hell yeah it’s definitely gonna be gay.” Well it is pretty gay, although nothing super explicit or defined.
This book was short, fast-paced, and filled to the brim with violence. It wasn’t a particularly enjoyable read (the gratuitous violence was a bit much) but I found myself unable to stop reading because I was so curious about what would happen next.
I do think this story would do well as a movie; it’s almost written like a screenplay. The language isn’t particularly descriptive and the plot moves along with little to no filler. The ending was rushed and I still don’t really understand the plot twist. I liked the concept but wasn’t impressed with the execution.
