3.75 stars!!! I liked it…well I mostly liked Greylock, the MMC who was a cinnamon role that I could smother in yummy frosting and enjoy!!
But this was too YA for me. I needed more spice!! But, the action scenes were great and there was NO cliffhanger!

I want a second book!! This was great. A little cheesy, some shallow writing to begin with (
the prison guards' insults felt fake
) but the story carried me away so I didn't notice any bad writing after the first couple chapters. I did notice some nice phrases, so I think the author may have been out of her comfort zone for the opening.

The lore/magic system was very cool, and I loved the descriptions of Elmira using her magic. There were some efforts made to learn how to use magic from old fairy tales, myths, etc. Love that. I like elemental magic stories, and this was a good one. The relationship aspect was also good, not too much deception/dissembling, some slight tension over each keeping their own counsel, but not too bad. The world was vivid and the warriors using chemical tech was super cool.

This book in a fantasy world uses "g*psy" and also does more telling than showing. Like the author wants us to listen to this hot guy talking about this woman and how cool and strong she is. But I didn't get any of that. People praise and applaud her and she's a water maker, which is cool, but that feels about it.

Lovely novel. Glorious world building, wow what a setting. The main character is strong, but a bit Mary-Sue. So far her only weakness is not being able to stay out of battle. She’s too perfect and is lacking a bit of depth. 3 out of 5 for her, 10/5 for the world building.
