The perfect rpg rules system

The 1E Player's Handbook suffers from a fatal game design flaw: it tries to keep too much of the system out of sight of the player, with crucial rules (like how to work out whether you have even hit an enemy!) kept to the DMG. Though Gygax had his reasons for doing this, I think in retrospect it was clearly a mistake to do this with a system as complex as he'd made 1E AD&D.
