Of the three in this series, I think this one is the most enigmatic and interesting. I loved the boxes but the doorways were a bit vague and sometimes the reference was tenuous. But this one was really great. The artwork in all three volumes is lovely.

The Explorer volumes are especially great for libraries and people new to graphic novels. The artwork is vibrant and varied.

The illustrations were very well done and I appreciated elements of the various short stories, but overall I felt the stories lacked something and was often left thinking, "What?"

I like the concept of each story being centered around this theme. I did like this collection less than I did the Mystery Boxes. I thought that theme lent itself to a wider variety of interpretations. I also just liked more of those stories. Overall, I felt like these were fine more than great for my particular taste. But it's really neat to get to experience many different art and story styles in one collection. I'll be looking for the third collection in this series.

70%

* since it's a collection of short stories by different authors, you get to see lots of different art styles

* collections can be hit-or-miss, so the quality of stories varied fairly drastically; some just weren't very good, some had abrupt endings and left you wanting more (Radio Adrift), and others were perfectly enchanting (Carapace)

Favorite was Radio Adrift

This is a collection of graphic short stories, and for that, I am already drawn to it. All of the stories revolve around the prompt: The Lost Islands, but each graphic artist has written a story with their unique style and flair. As a graphic novel book club leader, I love the opportunity to experience 7 different styles in one book.

In this book we have:

Rabbit Island by Jake Parker is a story about the use of technology to improve life which can have disastrous results as we become lazy.

The Mask Dance by Chrystin Garland seems to be a sort of trickster tale when a young girl heads off to a party instead of waiting for her father.

Carapace by Jason Caffoe has some of my favorite graphics and was the most popular of the first four among my 8-13-year-old readers - a tale a teamwork with an unexpected ending.

Desert Island Playlist by Dave Roman and Raina Telgemeier was one of my favorites for the deeper meaning and connections revealed as we realize she is on the island with different versions of herself.

Loah by Michel Gagné is a beautifully done story of teamwork.

Radio Adrift by Katie Shanahan and Steven Shanahan is a light-hearted story that seems to emphasize the importance of all of our stories.

The Fisherman by Kazu Kibuishi was a fun one to discuss foreshadowing and plot twist.

Overall, this Explorer book is another solid installment of this short story series.

I very much enjoyed this anthology, though I did like the first one better.
