I don’t want to love this book. I don’t want it to be a comfort read. I abhor the thoughtless fixation on royals and celebrities that cements a popular manufactured consent in the social, political, and economic hierarchy that white supremacy, capitalism and heteropatriarchy ultimately feed off. HATE THAT. I could not argue against people who would claim this book is a big pink washing project. Politically, I’m queer as in Fuck All this BS, and I wish more books would provide me with comfort reads that are more in alignment with my world view. But here I am, lapping this up despite my curled lip at Alex’s eye roll inducing sprinkle of  “Latino” identity and the unquestioning adoration of/submission to gross American politics and British colonialism ESPECIALLY AT A TIME OF MASS GENOCIDES AROUND THE WORLD.  But none of this is the author’s fault. Good on them for cashing in on the market. I hope some of the money goes somewhere  that benefits nonwhite queers in Louisiana, where leaders of some LGBTQ orgs are in bed with the most reprehensible political forces in the country. 🤮🤮🤮

I wound up giving this book three stars because as much as I did wind up liking it, it took me quite a while to actually get into it. It started out pretty slow, and it wasn’t until around the middle of the book that I started to get into it.

No, gracias.

What happens to them? Do they get married? I need an epilogue. The story should be only about them. And the last chapter is mostly about Alex's mother. I wanted more of them and less politics. I mnow that politics are important, but I do think there could be less of it.

I know this one is super popular, and it was a fun read, but I really wish there'd been more relationship building that weren't just sex, and which didn't feature as much alcohol (beyond just the romance, they drink a LOT, at least in the scenes we see, which made me somewhat uncomfortable).
