I enjoyed the reflective, free association of thoughts and musings style of writing this book had. I thought the dynamic between the two main characters was unique.

I typically enjoy plot-driven fiction more than character-driven, but this was a really lovely book! The Vulnerables is a story about loneliness and writing, set during the beginning of the COVID pandemic. Nuñez brilliantly captures the feeling of the time and the odd things that became normal amid the uncertainty. Throughout the novel, there are quotes from famous writers that connect to reflections and observations from the narrator (who seems based on Nuñez maybe?). Not much really happens in the book, and I probably would’ve rated it lower if it had gone on for another 50 pages. But it’s a quick, emotional read, and I found myself surprisingly engaged from start to finish.

Not really about a specific plot; more of a focus on reflections and thoughts set during the early pandemic days. I don’t normally love character-based writings but this one was well done and very fascinating. I could re-read this and glean new insights again and again.

What a lovely little read. I devoured this by reading and listening in tandem, and loved both formats equally.

This novel read like one long train of thought— many little meanderings strung together with an effortless smoothness. I’d be flowing through this story and suddenly realize that we’d arrived at a totally new topic while I’d never even noticed a transition.

This was my first Sigrid Nunez novel and I will definitely be picking up more. I have a good feeling that I’ll end up reading them all!
