It's a big, complex, powerful collection of writing regarding race, society, politics, and sincere essays of Black Life in America from the 1920s to 1958, two years prior to Hurston's death. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and the evidence that somebody could be a bundle of (seeming) contradictions but still be so powerfully revered in art spaces.
But I am annoyed with these reviews. You read thi,ls, recognize that some topics might be confusing or detached from your 21st century mind and make a note to do a little research or even just read the notes at the back. This is definitely not a book to be read by those who like their hands held by the author.

Zora Neale Hurston is amazing. This book of essays captures the author's fabulous minds. On the one hand, some of her ideas are amazingly prescient while the other hand they show signs of the times her own prejudices. An excellent read.

I chose this book because it's Black History month and it was a very good choice. I had never read anything by Zora Neale Hurston, but this certainly won't be the last. I can understand why she has been so revered.
Her writing absolutely captured the essence of the experience of the Black people. She gave a voice to them that had probably never been seen before, and wasn't widely seen since. I'm sure her works inspired many fantastic authors since then.
This book of essays and stories helps paint the picture of the lives of black Americans in the 20s-50s. More non-black people should read these books to realize what they encountered at the hands of others. It should be required reading at some level, but sadly, we know it never will.
