Meh. The first one was excellent, and I liked Malcom much more than Lyra. We’re back to Lyra but with none of the fun of the golden compass since she spends this entire book fighting with Pan and feeling sorry for herself. Ends in the middle of a scene, which is annoying. I know it’s a middle book, but giving no clear explanations and resolving no plot points in the entire book makes it frustrating and slow.
Ahhhhhhhh my childhood hero is back! How much I love Lyra and Pan.
I know some people are complaining about the two seprating and not getting along as well as a certain chapter. But here is my two cents, take it or leave it.
The reality of this world and ours is sometimes we hate ourselves, we have trauma that we have internalized to the point of self loathing. And if anyone can relate to that it's Lyra. Also we change so much when we go from child to adult.
As well we have one of the final chapters that deals with a very adult situation. I will admit it brought up some bad memories and may be triggering for some, but for me being able to see a woman who was able to fight back and walk away damaged yes but how bravely our girl fought.
My point is, the points that people have complained about are valid. But for myself being able to see my childhood hero go though a version of the same problems I and many other people I know have dealt helped solidify her again as the Hero she is to me.

It was worth it to have done a thorough reread of all of the other books in this series, particularly Once Upon A Time in the North, as you start to see threads come together and make connections between details that previously seemed unimportant.
The book itself felt overly long, but that might be due in part to me having been reading nothing but this series for the last couple of weeks. There are a lot of characters doing a lot of traveling in a lot of different places and I think an unnecessary amount of detail was included, but hey. Maybe when the next book comes out it will turn out that those will actually be important details, too!

roll forward Lyra is a young woman and the possibility of separation from her daemon and her future take us on a rollicking read. Back to familiar friends and to meet friends not seen from her past. Really enjoyed it. Maybe the film franchise should move to Australi because it would be a winner. New film studios in Melbourne. Very motivated for the third installment
