This would not be for young children, as the illustrations (beautiful paintings as they are) could be construed as rather scary and promote nightmares, especially with the ending; however, I would absolutely add this to my wordless picture book study for my middle school students. I can see some of them really getting into the ninja-like aspect of the shadow.

As I was reading this one, I was hanging in there (though I was a little bothered by the illustrations). However, the last page did it for me. More creep factor than a helpful story about overcoming fears. I would think it would freak out younger children rather than help them.
