This is not a short book, but I still felt as if I did not get enough details from the adventure. Perhaps because the book seemed to rely on secondhand sources, primarily the media coverage of the expedition.

Absolutely worth the read. It’s just a great mix of adventure, science, interpersonal, and niche. I desperately would love to see what these rapids in the Grand Canyon look like and learn more about its history, as well as the lives of these two scientists, after reading this book.

A fascinating history that continues the legacy of female botanists exploring this country. Appreciated the acknowledgement that indigenous people already know. Appreciated the history of the river and boating, and a touch of water rights.

A bit of a slower start, but an incredible story of two botanists who mapped the Grand Canyon Botany.

An excellent amalgamation of primary sources, historical imaginings and plenty of context both before and after the original river trip. This provides a wonderful look at the impacts of humanity on the shaping and reshaping of the Grand Canyon as well as colonizers upon the indigenous people who previously tended the area, all seen through a botanical lens. A fascinating look at a historical trip down the Colorado River on a scientific mission and how the public at large viewed the endeavor.
