Despite being a fan of short stories and Korean literature, I didn't love this one. The stories were suitably weird and some intrigued me, but I wasn't left with a sense that they would stay with me. Just fell a bit flat. Having said that, some of the tales have definitely stayed with me.

Cursed Bunny by Bora Chung, as a collection of short stories, is ideal for reading aloud around a fire, before dozing off in a strange bed, or while occupying fluorescent-lit liminal spaces such as doctor’s waiting rooms and subway cars: it’s strange, off-beat, supernatural and alien, and delivers inexplicable esoteric narratives. What it does not deliver, sadly, is three dimensional characters, genuinely interesting reveals, a truly unique voice, or the substance to match its modest style.
While the earliest stories in the collection have a bit more to offer in terms of originality or thematic depth (“The Head”, “The Embodiment ”, and the titular “Cursed Bunny” easily comprising the best the collection has to offer), reading deeper reveals a series of haphazardly executed ideas and fables that rarely ever deliver on the promise of their premises. As a result Cursed Bunny feels a bit like a collection of “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” ghost stories dressed up in the trappings of MFA lit-fic (which may have more to do with the translation than Chung's writing). Certainly they will whet your appetite for the weird and macabre, but I suspect few readers will leave the table feeling full.
