By turn delightful and devastating both. I don't have the energy for lengthy review, but safe to say this retelling of the story of the girl whose brothers were turned into swans is a beautiful one, full of the majesty and magic of Ireland, and all the fierce power of love and strength of will against unimaginable odds. I loved it.

Important trigger warnings to be aware of: SpoilerRape, emotional manipulation and abuse, physical abuse, starvation and disordered eating, self-harm by means of work/stings from a plant, animal abuse/murder, death of a parent, general violence.
For those sensitive to animals done harm: SpoilerThe dog does die - one at least. There is harm done to animals and whilst it is not discussed in excessive detail, the protagonist's narration of it does not gloss over.

The first of the Sevenwaters Series, Daughter of The Forest, does a lot more than set up the rest of the series and end on a cliffhanger. My pet hate of a series starter.

This book is atmospheric, weighty and full of character shaping tests and trials. Set in Ireland and England in the Dark Ages where land, pride and survival are paramount, a curse is placed on seven siblings by the Fae Folk. The only girl amongst the siblings has the power to break the curse but only if she can stay true to her dark path.

For a YA book, the story is darker than IIexpected. I enjoyed the suspense and the obstacles in the daughters way. They were of course linked to magic but not in a fantastical potteresque or belaqua way. The magic was of old lore, druids, celts and power of the elements. Each of the seven siblings had the skills within themselves that were needed but they had to discover them, hone them and trust them as masters of their own destiny and of their family and kin.

I'm excited to continue on to the second book where I hope for more of the same rich and powerful landscapes, ethereal and dark moods and internal struggles to complete the quests and rise to the challenges.
