This book was slightly over 70 pages but still felt excruciatingly slow. I really wanted to believe it would get better but that never happened.
A part of this book said: “Think of this as a short book composed of what I hoped would be a long book’s quotable passages.” If it makes Manguso feel better, I liked 3/300. There were ok lines but I don’t think that anything about this book was that notable or quotable.
This was a book that the author wrote when she should have been writing something else and I think her time would have been better invested in that book. This was trying to be more than what it was. I hope Manguso had more luck with her other book, because this one definitely needed a lot more editing. It was incredibly jumbled and chaotic, with messages that skipped around far too much.
I think it is good that the author discussed her experience with depression and her struggles in motherhood, but it wasn’t impactful for me.
