i definitely know abby jimenez has better works so i’ll give her a pass, but i won’t lie this book was just not it. kristen was absolutely unbearable, i’ve never had to read about a more stubborn character and the whole “i’m not like other girls” attitude put me off her even more. it was giving “pick-me” energy. the entire book she would just avoid telling josh the main issue even though it could’ve been solved forever ago which very extremely childish. also, the emotional cheating kristen did while brandon was away was soooooo disgusting. i couldn’t even like kristen and josh together because of it. why couldn’t she just break up with him if she clearly didn’t feel a spark anymore?

as for the good parts of this book, i think it was meaningful that abby brought light to infertility issues and what that looks like for a woman, but i still question why she made the ending the way it is if she wanted kristen to be finally comfortable in her own skin. overall, this book made me extremely uncomfortable and i tried very hard to like it but just absolutely could not.

emotional
I’m choosing not to give this a rating because I’m too biased by the lack of trigger warnings to do it fairly. This books is Abby’s first book, and follows the typical Abby Jimenez pipeline of emotional rollercoaster. However, even if it was written in 2019, there should still be somewhere easily accessible that states the trigger warnings. I’ll post spoiler thoughts below, but I was extremely frustrated with this whole book. The only positive was that she did do an amazing job portraying the emotions felt by women who walk the same path as the FMC.

Infertility due to menstrual issues that lead to scheduling a hysterectomy are a HUGE part of the plot. The FMC literally spends the book avoiding a real relationship with the MMC because she knows she can’t give him kids. But then *surprise* she’s pregnant? I listened to the author note, so I understand why she wrote it that way. But as someone who had a hysterectomy to increase my quality of life, this whole plot was EXTREMELY disheartening. Not only was there not a TW for infertility, but the infertility ended up being a non issue. Why not allow them to have kids in a non-traditional way so that women walking that path like me can see hope in the story?

Extremely gendered and typecast leads. MC can’t get out of her own way. Tragedy used as plot device to bring MCs together. Surprise pregnancy feels disingenuous given the emphasis on infertility.
