I wanted to like this book, but I couldn't get into it. The main character is annoying and flippant. She just accepts everything. She tried to escape once and was done fighting. She talks about being the most mature sibling but is whining about missing a date. She is all about all her responsibility, but is so quick to accept her current situation. Then, when the prince is about her sister, sisters, business, and boyfriend, Dani acts like it is a natural conversation. She doesn't internally question how this prince of fae knows so much about her sibling.

This book just fell flat for me. Couldn’t get into the characters and too many similarities taken and mixed up to the plot and world building. Something felt disconnected in the writing.

“No matter what happens after this moment, I want you to know that I don’t regret anything.”

“You give so much of yourself, without regard for your own life. You give openly with kindness in your heart and life at your fingertips.”

“This is me, pure and unadulterated, and nothing and no one will keep me from what I want.”

I really enjoyed this Beauty and the Beast retelling. A human healer kidnapped and forced to stay in the Fae realm to help the Fae Prince that turns into a beast every night… definitely my cup of tea. For the most part, the characters made a good group to follow along, with their banter and friendship and secrets. Their secret mission definitely has good promise to the plot, and the secrets and revelations as the book progresses had me hooked. I didn’t score it any higher because I felt like some of the plot wasn’t fleshed out enough, some parts felt way to easy to accomplish, and others were glossed over. Some questions about their journey and the curse was barely answered and I’m hoping that they’ll eventually be more described as the series goes on. Some of the writing and verbiage didn’t feel as mature as the storyline. But overall, I kept thinking about this one until I finished and it was a pretty good book!

I liked this. Strong lead, she doesn’t just sit around useless, and she saves people.

this is one of the few books I found over rated with how popular it was. I couldn't relate to the characters at all. I found the prince's friends to be insufferable, the MFC was one of those annoying "I always do the right thing and other people's flaws are inexcusable", while the MMC was one of those who didn't explain anything. also the plot was a little rushed, which normally I like quick books but it rushed the romantic plot too much. which made it just unnatural. Still glad I read it though. I might read the sequels to find out how the cliff hanger plays out.

Captivating, Mysterious, and Suspenseful

This book has so many twists and turns even from the beginning. The ending confused me but it has left me longing for the next book! The story of a Fae prince and a human girl, their destiny's entertwined yet far apart.

I read this thinking it would be a hilariously bad rip-off of The Cruel Prince, but it wasn’t.

I mean, it was hilariously bad, just not a rip off of The Cruel Prince.

Yes, there are similarities. The name of Elfhame was taken and oh so cleverly reworked into Elf-hame. There was mention of a prince named Cardian? Which honestly just made me bust out laughing. And yeah, fae prince, but every other book coming out recently is about a fae prince so whatever.

The book is meant for adults yet the writing quality reads like it was intended for 7th graders. Perhaps this is meant to reflect how the main character has the emotional maturity of a 7th grader. I dunno. What I do know it that I’m very strong and brave for powering through it.

Edit: Just want to amend that Elfhame isn’t even an original concept by Holly Black. It dates back to 19th century Scottish folklore, generally used in reference to the Queen of Elfhame. Also spelled Elphame and Elf-hame. Ya learn something new every day!
