I started reading regularly (one book a month) in 2019, and I always finished every book I started, even if I didn't enjoy it. This however, is the first book that I just could not finish. Stopped about 50 pages in. I just didn't understand the story and found it incredibly slow and dull.

I don't know if I liked this or not. I certainly didn't enjoy it, but it is most definitely well written. It might be too realistic both in terms of the worst in human nature and in terms of pacing.I never did get the elephant. Where did it come from and why would the band of hoodlums expend so much energy towing around its cage?
