This book was fantastic! Good pacing telling an incredible story. MMC is swoon worthy. FMC is strong, fiesty, independent, clever, and deadly. Excellent unique world building that initially feels like it might be overwhelming, but the author does an excellent job giving everything context. Mild gore and  🌶 🌶. The Dragons are perfect. Ends on a cliffhanger as this is first book in a series. Really loved this book and can't wait for the next book.

“Broken things make the sharpest weapons.”

I was very excited to start this book after all the hype it was receiving on BookTok!
I struggled a little to get into it with the heavy world building and found myself flipping to the glossary quite a lot at the start.
Raeve is a strong bounty hunter with a dark side to herself. We learn a lot more about her past through diary entries (which was also a little confusing at the start because they’re not “technically” her diary entries). I would love to get to know the dragons more, as right now they mostly feel like transport rather than super connected to their riders (other than Slatra) and we don’t know why they bond with Fae.
It was a slow and dense read but I did enjoy it and the end answered some questions but also left me wanting more. I’m excited to see where it goes!

welp... this was my most disappointing, if not overall worst, read of 2024.

from the cover i was expecting a dreamy, whimsical ghibli-esque fantasy a la the girl who fell beneath the sea.
what i got was a butchered amalgamation of the ACOTAR/FBAA/fourth wing romantasy trend with bad writing, minimal worldbuilding, forgettable characters, and way too many italics.

there was no reason for this book to be more than 350 pages.

i don't think i would've come down this hard if this book hadn't been so hyped and i'd only been seeing positive reviews. i'm just shocked bc i can overlook using all the romantasy tropes, but i don't even feel like it fully commits to those on top of the writing and story not delivering.

i would have dnf'd, but i needed to see this one through to speak on it. i will not be continuing the series.

I was so excited when I first heard of this book and I saw so much potential. Unfortunately, it fell flat for me. Raeve came off as an attempt at Aelin in Heir of Fire and her actions throughout the book were so inconsistent. While I understood the fixation on killing Rekk, it made her so one dimensional.

The romance between
Raeve and Kaan
was extremely rushed and didn’t make any sense to me. One minute she’s trying to kill him and one minute she’s aching to get with him.

I frequently pictured Kaan as the Boulder from Avatar the Last Airbender. The descriptions of the male characters read as cartoonish and way overdone.

For a book involving dragons, we learned relatively little about them. They were not as central to the plot as I thought they would be.

The use of the glossary and
family tree at the end
seemed like a cop out, especially considering how wordy this author likes to be. The writing was difficult for me to follow at times, so I found myself skimming pages instead of actually reading them.
