I thought this was cute, but verges on naive. (You can't just smile at strangers on the street in DC. It's not a thing.) I do wonder, though, if Ms. Witherspoon ever stopped in the middle of writing this and pondered whether she actually grew up in a cult. I know that everything she describes is "normal" Southern behavior, but if viewed in any other context, it sounds a little culty.
