If you've seen my "Read" list, you'll know I like dystopian novels. This one wasn't bad, but it was just ok, with people doing nonsensical things and being slow on the uptake. I want characters who learn from their mistakes and experiences and develop. These didn't, and it was frustrating.

DAMMIT. This book was a four or five star read, gripping as hell, beautifully written... until the second half. It's like I just read two separate books. I was so invested in Joy's life, so enthralled by what was going on at the Hospital and her relationship with Louis. I shed tears! I didn't want to put it down!
And then it just fell apart.
I know van den Berg has written short stories before this, so I'll definitely check them out, as she's a beautiful writer. Rounding up to three stars because I loved the first section so much.

I read an article once that said people who like dystopian books fall into two categories… The first are people who are looking to fill contentment with their current reality by reading about how much more terrible things could get... The second group or people who read them as if they are instruction manuals on how to survive... I fall into the latter and so was looking for a good pandemic dystopian novel...This wasn’t it.

Hmm... so torn between how many stars to give this book. It was probably a 3.5 star book. I loved it, but I didn't love it. I feel like this book was written by two different authors. The first half was great. The second half made me wonder if I was reading the same book. Read my full review at http://www.booklovinalicia.blogspot.com

First half, 3, last half 0. I felt like the author couldn't keep a train of thought. A jumbled mess that I stuck with, just because I thought there would be a point, that things would become clear? Sadly, I was so wrong. Waste of time.

Well I'm not really sure what to say about this book other than don't bother reading it. Horrible pointless waste of time.

I couldn't help but think of (and compare it to) Saramago's Blindness. Saramago's book is brilliant. this one was just tedious. I've read short stories by this author and they were wonderful. But this novel was hard to wade through. And I wasn't able to finish it.
