A Single Man

Christopher Isherwood

The movie is one of my favourites. It is really interesting getting into the characters head, as I hoped, because there are so many nuances acting can get across only so much. The plot seemed, from what I remember, almost exactly the same as the movie; it’s been some time but I am pretty sure the dialogue is close to verbatim.

I wonder what the impact would have been like had I read the book first though. You only get one ending, if they are the same. In this case the movie soaked up my emotional responses, mostly. Thoroughly enjoyable to read, especially for the prose.

"At all events, he remembers throwing this or some other book just like it into the wastebasket, in the middle of the big screwing- scene. Not that one isn't broad-minded, of course; let them write about heterosexuality if they must, and let everyone read it who cares to. Just the same, it is a deadly bore and, to be frank, a wee bit distasteful. Why can't these modern writers stick to the old simple wholesome themes - such for example, boys?)"

If this book is sitting unread on your shelf like mine was, please stop whatever you're reading and give one day of your life to this masterpiece by Isherwood. You will be duly rewarded, I promise.

This is the fourth book I've read by Isherwood and it never ceases to amaze me how many variations of himself he can give to his works. Although our narrator feels and acts like the Christopher of Goodbye to Berlin and Down There on a Visit, the novel surrounding him is wholly different. It's experimental and heartbreaking, succinct yet indulgent. It's beyond beautiful and catches even the most stoic readers off guard with its stabs of emotion.

Mix the dull monotony of writing a story in a single day with grief and 1960s sexism and there you have it - A Single Man.
